Dr. Maria Brake MD, FRCSC
Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery

Dr Maria Brake joined the Okanagan medical community in 2016 after transitioning from a busy Ottawa practice and a professorship with the University of Ottawa. She originally hails from Newfoundland, and completed medical school training at Memorial University in 2008. She went on to complete her residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Dalhousie in 2013, followed by a fellowship in 2014 at the University of Toronto in Laryngology (voice and airway) with an extra focus in thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Prior to her medical training, she had a career in physics, working for both an engineering company and a medical physics department.

Beyond her clinical practice, Dr Brake is a member of the UBC Otolaryngology Department, and is involved in teaching both medical students and residents.

Dr Brake accepts all types of general otolaryngology consults, but her areas of focus are in the following:

Laryngeal Disorders

  • Voice, including the Professional Voice
  • Early laryngeal cancers
  • Airway
  • Swallowing

General Head and Neck Surgery, especially:

  • Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery, including thyroid cancer
  • Skin cancers
  • Salivary gland pathology
  • Neck masses

General Otolaryngology

  • Pediatric Otolaryngology
  • Nasal obstruction and sinus disease

Outside of the office, Dr Brake enjoys skiing, biking and exploring the beautiful offerings of the Okanagan valley and the region.
